Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal has announced that its subsidiary ArcelorMittal Belgium has started production at its carbon capture and utilization (CCU) project “Steelanol facility” at its steel plant in Ghent.

The Steelanol facility, which captures carbon-rich waste and converts its into ethanol, has an annual production capacity of 80 million litres of ethanol, around half of the total current demand in Belgium.

The facility is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions from the Ghent plant by 125,000 mt, as SteelOrbis previously reported.
