The US Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a $30 million grant from federal stimulus funds for the construction of a "green" power generation at AK Steel's Middletown, Ohio works.

Pennsylvania-based Air Products and Chemicals will construct the plant, which will capture and process blast furnace gas and use it to generate over 100 megawatts of power annually.

AK Steel says that the firm will receive all of the steam and electricity generated by the plant and is currently determining how best to use that energy.

The $30 million grant will provide for approximately 10 percent of the total $300 million cost of the project, with other funding to be determined. The AK Steel grant is one of 41 grants totaling $155 million announced by the DOE this week for industrial energy-efficient projects across the country. The grants will be funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
