Ohio steelmaker AK Steel Holdings Corporation may be interested in purchasing the Sparrows Point plant in Maryland.

A United Steelworkers union official told union members that AK Steel representatives toured the plant on Monday. However, AK Steel is not commenting at this time.

Over a year ago, Mittal Steel Company agreed to sell Sparrows Point in order to settle antitrust issues with the US Justice Department, resulting from the company's merger with Arcelor. Subsequently, a $1.35 billion deal with Chicago-based Esmark Inc. fell through when Esmark's partners walked away from the table and took much of the financing with them.
