AHMSA’s subsidiary, Mexican miner Minosa, has started up operations at two iron ore sites near its Hercules mine, the company said this week.

The two iron ore sites are located on both sides of the border between the cities of Coahuila and Chihuahua, and have a combined potential to produce up to 2 million mt/year.

The two mines, known as La Negra and H14, are located 60 and 3.5 km, respectively, from Minosa’s Herculues mine, and are expected to “reinforce the supply of iron concentrate that is sent to the furnaces of AHMSA in Monclova,” the company said in a statement.

Minosa has guaranteed iron ore reserves for 20 years. Additionally, the Minosa unit has installed a power plant at its Mine 7, which is expected to generate electricity through methane gas associated to coal seams, a fuel that used to be wasted due to legal restrictions.
