The leading Japanese EAF-based steel producer Tokyo Steel has increased its local scrap procurement prices today, May 12, following the higher price recorded in the Kanto scrap export tender. With scrap prices in the Kanto tender again moving up and continuing their upward trend which started in July 2025, Tokyo Steel is adjusting its prices to compete with the demand received from abroad. Since the beginning of 2026, Tokyo Steel’s local H2 scrap procurement prices have moved up by JPY 9,500-10,000/mt or $59-62/mt, while the rise in the Kanto tender has been JPY 7,831/mt or $52/mt in total over the same period.
Tokyo Steel’s general purchase price range for H2 grade scrap has moved up by JPY 1,000/mt as compared to the levels recorded on April 16 to JPY 54,000/mt ($343/mt) depending on the mill. Taking into account the changes in the exchange rate, the dollar-based prices have increased by $10/mt.
Also, Tokyo Steel’s shindachi scrap prices have increased by JPY 1,000/mt to the range of JPY 55,000-59,000/mt ($349-374/mt) delivered, up by $9/mt on dollar basis. The prices shared on the table below are effective as of May 13.
