On December 9, Tokyo Steel, the main EAF-based steel producer in Japan, announced its new scrap purchase prices, decreasing them for two of its plants. This has happened after a long pause as the previous adjustment was on November 19. Though bearish sentiment is still prevailing in the local Japanese scrap market, overall conditions and prices are still much better than in the export market.
Accordingly, the prices for H2 at the Tahara Works and the Utsunomiya plant have decreased by JPY 500/mt ($4.4/mt) to JPY 54,500/mt ($480/mt), while prices at other plants have been kept stable. Concurrently, the prices for shindachi scrap have moved down by JPY 2,500/mt ($22/mt) and JPY 500/mt ($4.4/mt) in Tahara Works and Utsunomiya to JPY 58,500/mt ($515/mt) and JPY 56,500/mt ($498/mt), respectively.
On balance, following the revision, Tokyo Steel’s new price levels for H2 scrap are now in the range of JPY 51,000-54,500/mt ($449-480/mt), while for shindachi scrap they are at JPY 53,500-58,500/mt ($471-515/mt). All prices are delivered and effective from December 10.
