The leading Japanese EAF-based steel producer Tokyo Steel has cut its domestic scrap purchase price by JPY 500/mt in the Kansai region, though its general price range has remained stable for both H2 scrap and shindachi grade. Following the week-long holiday in Japan, some market sources report that a softening in both domestic and export prices seems possible for Japanese scrap.
The general range for H2 grade scrap price has remained unchanged in the range of JPY 38,000-40,500/mt ($257-274/mt) depending on the mill. The scrap purchase price for the Tokyo Bay and Tahara yards represents the upper end of the price range. Taking into account the changes in the exchange rate, the dollar-based prices have declined by $2/mt as compared to the levels mentioned on July 11.
Meanwhile, shindachi scrap prices of Tokyo Steel are still at JPY 39,000-42,500/mt ($364-288/mt) delivered, stable on Japanese yen basis, while down by $2/mt in US dollars. The prices shared in the table below are effective as of July 10.
