Local Turkish scrap market falls further amid weaker import segment

Turkey’s local scrap market has continued its downward trend over the past week as sharp declines were observed in deep sea and short sea scrap prices. The negative sentiment in the market continues as Turkish mills’ steel sales have little potential to accelerate in the summer period, while more cuts may be seen in the domestic scrap market in the coming weeks. Turkish mills have dropped their domestic scrap prices by TRY 200-800/mt or $6-18/mt since SteelOrbis’ previous report published on June 26. Two mills have kept their scrap purchase prices stable over the past week, with their dollar-based quotations down $1/mt week on week due to the depreciation of the Turkish lira.

The general range in the local Turkish scrap market for the benchmark DKP grade scrap has moved down from TRY 15,400-18,600/mt to TRY 15,400-18,300/mt. Due to the fluctuations observed in the exchange rate, the dollar-based quotations have changed from $330-399/mt to $329-391/mt.
