During the week ending December 18, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have edged up, while transaction activity in the market has been at medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, blast furnaces’ capacity utilization rate has moved up and increased the semi-finished steel supply, while demand from downstream users has also improved, exerting a positive impact on semi-finished steel prices. However, following the rises seen in semi-finished steel prices, downstream users have started to think about halting part of their production of finished steel due to increased cost and strict environmental protection requirement. It is expected that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will bear downward pressure in the coming week.
