During the week ending July 16, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have moved on diverse trends, with the largest increases in billet prices seen in Fuzhou and with slab prices in Tangshan also moving upwards, while transaction activity in the market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, semi-finished steel supply has been in short supply in China due to production cuts made within the scope of environmental protection measures. Meanwhile, iron ore prices have continued to move at high levels, bolstering semi-finished steel prices. However, demand has not improved due to the rainy weather and high temperatures. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in China will likely just indicate minor fluctuations in the coming week.
