As of March 6, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have moved downwards on week-on-week basis, while transaction activity in the market has been at low levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
In the first part of the given week, due to news of further environmental protection measures, market participants were mostly upbeat on the future prospects for the semi-finished steel price trend and so they raised their prices. However, with ferrous metals futures prices in China moving on a declining trend in the latter part of the given week, semi-finished steel prices were negatively affected and declined. Since the weather is becoming warmer, demand from downstream users will improve. It is thought that domestic semi-finished steel prices in China will likely move upwards in the coming week.
