As of January 8, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have declined on week-on-week basis, while transaction activity in the market has been approaching medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, domestic semi-finished steel prices first declined while later increasing, with average prices now lower compared to before the New Year holiday. At the same time, transaction activity has been at low-to-medium levels, while starting to show improvement. Steel production restrictions have been terminated in some regions, exerting a positive impact on the semi-finished steel market. Meanwhile, rebar and HRC futures prices at Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) have bottomed up, also positively affecting the semi-finished steel market. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely edge up in the coming week.
