During the week ending November 21, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have indicated diverse trends, with billet prices in Tangshan edging down, while prices in other regions either increased or moved on a stable trend. Transaction activity in the market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
Ferrous metal futures prices in China moved down significantly at the beginning of the past week, negatively impacting domestic semi-finished steel prices. In the past two trading days, ferrous metal futures prices have increased and this is expected to provide support for the semi-finished steel market. Currently, inventories of semi-finished steel have decreased and are at relatively low levels - another factor which will bolster semi-finished steel prices. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely edge up slightly in the coming week.
