During the week ending October 17, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have mostly seen a rising trend, though indicated decreases in Fuzhou, while transaction activity in the market has been at low levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
At the beginning of the given week after the long holiday, semi-finished steel prices have decreased significantly as demand has not improved, while semi-finished steel prices picked up due to environmental protection issue in the latter period of the week. Currently, the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China is scheduled to begin on October 18, the demand for semi-finished steel will likely be slacker. However, finished steel prices have moved well, providing certain support to semi-finished steel prices. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely move sideways in the coming week.
