License data from the US Department of Commerce shows that for the month of June, the US imported 219,892 mt of HDG coil from global sources, the bulk of which, 80,826 mt, was slated to arrive from Canada. In contrast, the US brought in 274,333 mt of HDG from global sources in June 2017.
Whether the licensed coil actually arrived from Canada has yet to be seen; it’s believed that some Canadian tons may have been cancelled due the implementation of a 25 percent tariff under Section 232.
Another thing to keep an eye on is import tonnages from Vietnam; for the month of June, license data show the US was expected to bring in 32,314 mt of HDG coil from Vietnam, which is more than three times the amount of HDG coil that was imported from that same country during June 2017.
