Ex-China plate prices relatively stable, mood starts to change from negative to positive

Mainstream ex-China steel plate offer prices from mills have been heard at $630/mt FOB for November shipment as of today, Monday, September 19, moving sideways compared to September 13, while down $5/mt compared to September 5. Reference deal prices have been heard at $620-625/mt FOB to South America and Southeast Asia.

During the given week, steel plate prices have edged down, while transaction activities have improved to some degree. Following typhoon Muifa, the demand for steel plate from downstream users has indicated certain improvements, which will bolster prices in the near future. Meanwhile, market players are more confident towards the prospects for the future steel plate market. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely edge up in the coming week. 

Average Q235 20 mm steel plate spot prices in China have lost RMB 24/mt ($3.6/mt) compared to September 13, standing at RMB 4,176/mt ($602/mt) ex-warehouse, according to SteelOrbis’ information.

As of September 19, HRC futures at the Shanghai Futures Exchange are standing at RMB 3,750/mt ($540/mt), declining by RMB 114/mt ($16.4/mt) or 2.95 percent since September 13.
