Summary of China’s steel imports and exports in April

In April, China's finished steel exports totaled 1.4143 million mt, sharply down 3.3592 million mt or 70.37 percent year on year, totaling a value of $1.585 billion, down $2.846 billion or 64.23 percent compared with the same month last year. In addition, finished steel exports for the January-April period reached 6.5585 million mt, down 9.6036 million mt or 59.42 percent, amounting to a total value of $7.529 billion, down $6.821 billion or 47.53 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, China's finished steel imports in April totaled 1.6162 million mt, up 112,900 mt or 7.51 percent year on year, totaling $1.766 billion in value, down $354 million or 16.71 percent compared with the same month last year. In addition, finished steel imports for the January-April period reached 4.8521 million mt, down 816,600 mt or 14.41 percent, amounting to a value of $6.03 billion, down $1.469 billion or 19.58 percent year on year.

In April, the country's net imports of finished steel amounted to 201,900 mt, totaling a value of $181 million. The average export price was $1,120.61/mt, up $192.34/mt or 20.72 percent year on year. The average import price was $1,092.95/mt, down $317.91/mt or 22.53 percent year on year. The export price was $27.66/mt or 2.53 percent higher than the import price.

The breakdown of China's steel imports and exports in April is as follows:

Steel bar exports in April stood at 35,100 mt, down 510,200 mt or 93.56 percent year on year, totaling $35 million in value, down $435 million or 92.64 percent compared with the same month last year. The average export price was $982.65/mt. Total exports in the January-April period reached 205,900 mt, down 1.4222 million mt or 87.35 percent, amounting to $205 million in value, down $1.129 billion or 84.61 percent year on year.

Steel bar imports in April stood at 20,700 mt, down 22,500 mt or 56.06 percent year on year, totaling $44 million in value, down $36 million or 45.3 percent compared with the same month last year. The average import price was $2,118.74/mt. Total January-April steel bar imports reached 71,100 mt, down 77,300 mt or 52.09 percent, amounting to a total value of $159 million, down $117 million or 42.33 percent year on year.

Rebar exports in April stood at 19,100 mt, down 90,400 mt or 82.58 percent year on year, totaling $12 million in value, down $67 million or 84.5 percent compared with the same month last year. The average export price was $643.14/mt. Total rebar exports in the January-April period reached 129,400 mt, down 336,300 mt or 72.2 percent, amounting to $81 million, down $224 million or 73.47 percent year on year.

Rebar imports in April stood at 2,000 mt, down 200 mt or 7.49 percent year on year, totaling $2 million in value, up $300,000 or 22.93 percent compared with the same month last year. The average import price was $773.2/mt. Total January-April rebar imports reached 11,800 mt, down 500 mt or 3.86 percent, amounting to a total value of $9 million, down $2.5 million or 40.28 percent year on year.

China's wire rod exports in April totaled 51,100 mt, down 455,600 mt or 89.9 percent year on year, totaling $26 million in value, down $355 million or 93.16 percent compared with the same period last year. The average wire rod export price was $510.25/mt. Total exports in January-April reached 230,700 mt, down 1.0249 million mt or 81.62 percent, amounting to $126 million in value, down $749 million or 85.63 percent year on year.

Wire rod imports in April amounted to 32,000 mt, down 22,900 mt or 41.72 percent year on year, totaling a value of $35 million, down $27 million or 43.38 percent compared with the same period last year. The average wire rod import price was $1,096.3/mt. Total imports in January-April reached 110,600 mt, down 77,600 mt or 41.24 percent, amounting to $128 million, down $85 million or 39.74 percent year on year.

China's medium plate exports in April reached 168,400 mt, down 521,800 mt or 75.6 percent year on year, totaling $136 million in value, down $474 million or 77.69 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $807.85/mt. Total January-April exports reached 1.0373 million mt, down 1.8471 million mt or 64.04 percent, amounting to a total value of $967 million, down $1.434 billion or 59.74 percent year on year.

Medium plate imports in April stood at 102,600 mt, down 9,100 mt or 8.17 percent year on year, totaling $167 million, down $15 million or 8.03 percent compared with the same month last year. The average import price was $1,626.71/mt. Total January-April medium plate imports came to 388,700 mt, down 25,500 mt or 6.16 percent, amounting to $669 million, up $47 million or 7.51 percent year on year.

China's HR coil export volume in April stood at 109,400 mt, down 698,700 mt or 86.46 percent year on year, totaling a value of $80 million, down $548 million or 87.32 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $728.28/mt. Total January-April HR coil exports reached 527,600 mt, down 2.1777 million mt or 80.5 percent, amounting to $403 million, down $1.584 billion or 79.71 percent year on year.

HR coil imports in April came to 497,900 mt, up 309,700 mt or 164.62 percent year on year, totaling a value of $270 million, up $71 million or 35.63 percent compared with the same period last year. The average HR coil import price was $541.55/mt. Total HR coil imports in the January-April period reached 1.2836 million mt, up 602,800 mt or 88.53 percent, amounting to $770 million in value, up $59 million or 8.27 percent year on year.

China's CR coil export volume in April reached 33,500 mt, down 194,400 mt or 85.31 percent year on year, totaling $34 million, down $243 million or 87.61 percent compared with the same period last year. The average CR coil export price was $1,025.8/mt. Total January-April exports for this product reached 155,300 mt, down 581,000 mt or 78.9 percent, amounting to $143 million in value, down $740 million or 83.82 percent year on year.

CR coil imports in April stood at 437,800 mt, up 43,200 mt or 10.94 percent year on year, totaling $308 million in value, down $70 million or 18.56 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $702.79/mt. Total January-April CR coil imports reached 1.1936 million mt, down 326,900 mt or 21.5 percent, amounting to a value of $902 million, down $484 million or 34.92 percent year on year.
