Summary of China’s steel imports & exports in September

In September, China's finished steel exports totaled 6.663 million mt, up 2.223 million mt or 50.1 percent year on year, totaling a value of $7.93 billion, up $4.55 billion or 134.6 percent compared with the same period last year. In addition, finished steel exports for the January-September period reached 48.461 million mt, down 1.061 million mt or 2.1 percent, amounting to a total value of $49.77 billion, up $15.76 billion or 46.4 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, China's finished steel imports in September totaled 1.265 million mt, down 164,000 mt or 11.5 percent year on year, totaling $2.18 billion in value, up $415 million or 23.5 percent compared with the same period last year. In addition, finished steel imports for the January-September period reached 12.291 million mt, down 687,000 mt or 5.29 percent, amounting to $17.954 billion, up $2.302 billion or 14.7 percent year on year.

In September, the country's net exports of finished steel amounted to 5.398 million mt, totaling a value of $5.75 billion. The average export price was $1,190.14/mt, up $428.84/mt or 56.3 percent year on year. The average import price was $1,723.52/mt, up $500.12/mt or 40.9 percent year on year. The export price was $533.38/mt or 31 percent lower than the import price.

In the January-September period, China's net finished steel exports reached 36.17 million mt, amounting to a value of $31.816 billion.

The breakdown of China's steel imports and exports in September is as follows:

Rebar exports in September stood at 149,000 mt, down 54,000 mt or 26.8 percent year on year, totaling $146 million in value, down $41 million or 39.8 percent compared with the same month last year. The average export price was $977.48/mt. Total exports in the January-September period reached 1.031 million mt, down 4.205 million mt or 80.2 percent, amounting to $822 million, down $1.5 billion or 64.6 percent year on year.

Rebar imports in September stood at 1,000 mt, down 3,000 mt or 70 percent year on year, totaling $1 million. The average import price was $866/mt. Total January-September imports reached 21,100 mt, down 20,200 mt or 48.9 percent, amounting to $12 million, down $9 million or 42.7 percent year on year.

China's wire rod exports in September totaled 558,000 mt, up 253,000 mt or 82.9 percent year on year, totaling $565 million in value, up $409 million or 263.1 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,011.51/mt. Total exports in January-September reached 4.517 million mt, down 708,000 mt or 13.6 percent, amounting to $3.897 billion in value, up $1.5 billion or 62.4 percent year on year.

Wire rod imports in September amounted to 42,000 mt, down 4,000 mt or 8.6 percent year on year, totaling a value of $62 million, up $18 million or 40.9 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,462.3/mt. Total imports in January-September reached 403,500 mt, down 84,200 mt or 17.3 percent, amounting to $502 million, up $72 million or 16.9 percent year on year.

China's medium plate exports in September reached 810,000 mt, up 197,000 mt or 32.2 percent year on year, totaling $986 million in value, up $551 million or 126.8 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,216.72/mt. Total January-September exports reached 6.561 million mt, up 364,000 mt or 5.9 percent, amounting to a total value of $6.489 billion, up $2.48 billion or 61.8 percent year on year.

Medium plate imports in September reached 104,000 mt, down 2,000 mt or 1.8 percent year on year, totaling $184 million, up $36 million or 24.4 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,766.3/mt. Total January-September medium plate imports came to 961,500 mt, up 65,700 mt or 7.33 percent, amounting to $1.534 billion, up $314 million or 28.57 percent year on year.

China's HR coil export volume in September stood at 1.32 million mt, up 610,000 mt or 85.8 percent year on year, totaling a value of $1.386 billion, up $937 million or 208.4 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,050.29/mt. Total January-September HR coil exports reached 9.165 million mt, up 1.547 million mt or 20.3 percent, amounting to $8.145 billion, up $3.44 billion or 73 percent year on year.

HR coil imports in September came to 140,000 mt, down 23,000 mt or 14 percent year on year, totaling a value of $174 million, down $26 million or 17.5 percent compared with the same period last year. The average HR coil import price was $1,245.18/mt. Total HR coil imports in the January-September period reached 1.4592 million mt, down 403,500 mt or 21.7 percent, amounting to $1.624 billion in value, down $503 million or 23.66 percent year on year.

China's CR coil export volume in September reached 447,000 mt, up 55,700 mt or 14.2 percent year on year, totaling $520 million, up $190 million or 57.1 percent compared with the same period last year. The average CR coil export price was $1,170.4/mt. Total January-September exports for this product reached 2.7086 million mt, down 579,700 mt or 17.6 percent, amounting to $3.2 billion, up $359 million or 12.6 percent year on year.

CR coil imports in September stood at 305,000 mt, down 249,000 mt or 45 percent year on year, totaling $366 million in value, down $115 million or 23.9 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,201.08/mt. Total January-September CR coil imports reached 3.2883 million mt, down 135,800 mt or 4.13 percent, amounting to a value of $3.186 billion, up $345 million or 12.15 percent year on year.
