WTO decides against Chinese countermeasures on US Section 232

World Trade Organization (WTO) has announced the conclusion reached at its panel regarding China’s additional duties on certain steel products from the US imposed as countermeasures against the Section 232 tariffs.

The panel, which had been established in November 2018, following the request of the US, has found that the additional duties are inconsistent with the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The WTO has called on China to bring its WTO-inconsistent measures into conformity with its obligations under the GATT.

“The US is pleased with the WTO panel report, recognizing that the US Section 232 actions on steel and aluminum are security measures, and that China illegally retaliated with sham safeguard tariffs,” Sam Michel, USTR spokesperson, said in a statement.
