World pig iron production falls in May

According to the data released by The World Steel Association (worldsteel), formerly the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI), world pig iron production for approximately 60 countries surveyed was 72.1 million metric tons in May, down by 14.16 percent year on year. Meanwhile, world direct reduced iron (DRI) production in May totaled 4.5 million metric tons, decreasing by 7.05 percent compared to May 2008.

Moreover, world pig iron production in the January-May period of 2009 amounted to 336.69 million metric tons, decreasing by 16.48 percent year on year, while global DRI production in the period in question decreased by 9.46 percent to 21.62 million metric tons.
