World pig iron output up 2.5 percent in January-September

In September this year, world pig iron production amounted to 104.66 million mt, falling by 1.5 percent compared to August and increasing by 2.6 percent compared to the same month of 2017, according to the preliminary data covering 38 countries accounting for approximately 99 percent of total world blast furnace pig iron production, as announced by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).

Meanwhile, in the first nine months of this year, world pig iron production totaled 932.41 million mt, up by 2.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

In September, pig iron output in Asia amounted to 83.62 million mt, up 3.6 percent, with 66.37 million mt produced by China, increasing by 4.4 percent, 6.26 million mt produced by Japan, falling by 1.8 percent, and 5.6 million mt produced by India, increasing by 1.7 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis. Meanwhile, in the same month, EU countries produced 7.28 million mt of pig iron, down 3.4 percent year on year, while the CIS produced 6.32 million mt, down 1.3 percent, on year-on-year basis.
