Workers at Peru’s only iron ore producer, Shougang Hierro Peru, commenced a strike this week, a local union said.
According to mining union Federacion Nacional de Trabajadores Mineros Metalurgicos y Siderurgicos del Peru (FNTMMSP), the strike started on October 9 and will continue for an indefinite period of time, as no deal was reached over employee demands for higher wages.
FNTMMSP said the company argues it doesn’t have the funds to increase salaries, but the mining union said iron ore prices have been on an increasing trend. FNTMMSP was not immediately available to comment on the strike as of Wednesday.
