The Netherlands-based long steel producer Van Merksteijn and German steelmaker Badische Stahlwerke plan to merge their rebar businesses by establishing a joint company in spring 2025, according to the joint statement from the companies. The company will be established in the Netherlands under the name of Reinforcing Steel Europe B.V. The merger is currently under review by antitrust and market authorities.

The planned merger will strengthen both companies’ position as a major producer and processor of rebar in the EU. The companies’ geographically diversified presence will allow them to be even closer to customers across Europe.

In addition, according to the statement, in recent years, the reinforcing steel sector has faced numerous challenges such as the corona crisis, changing environmental legislation, limited availability of raw materials and unpredictable energy prices.
