Vallourec Star announced Thursday that it is “taking further steps to streamline operations” at its Youngstown, Ohio pipe plant.

The workforce reductions will number 60-80 workers out of an approximate 500 employees, effective in early August. The $1 billion facility is only three years old, but the layoffs are due to continuing low demand for pipe from the energy sector.

Vallourec Star idled the facility for three weeks in February 2015.

Vallourec Star understands the cyclical nature of the oil and gas industry, and remains confident in the business long-term. We are taking steps now to position ourselves to remain competitive over the long run,” the company said in a release.
