Brazilian flat steel producer Usiminas Tuesday announced they have won the international bid to supply 7.7 tons to the shipyard Mauá Petro Um (RJ). The steel will be used to build ships for clear products transportation and is part of "Transpetro" (Promef) Fleet Modernization and Expansion Program, coordinated by "Transpetro", Petrobras subsidiary.

As the only thick plate's supplier to the naval sector in Brazil, Usiminas was the most competitive option among steelmaking plants from five different countries. With this result, Usiminas has already agreed upon 40 thousand tons of steel for Promef ships, which represents 32 percent of all the steel that has been bought up to now - 123.6 tons.

The 7.7 tons of steel for the Mauá Petro Um shipyard, which will be supplied in July and August, add up to other 2 thousand tons already supplied in 2009 for clear products transport ships building.

According to Usiminas president, Wilson Brumer, Usiminas has a wide technological background and the necessary flexibility to support the Brazilian naval industry development. "We will help by supplying high added value services and products that more competitive to the market. So, we may say that Usiminas is committed to make Promef ships manufacturing feasible with national steel", stated Brumer, at the beginning of this week during a meeting with Transpetro president, Sérgio Machado, in Rio de Janeiro.

"We have always stated our preference to buy steel in Brazil, since we may have a competitive price compared to international markets. The result of this bid is a sign of the beginning of a new era in the relationship between Usiminas and Transpetro, precisely at the moment of Brazilian naval industry resumption", states Sérgio Machado, Transpetro CEO.

Created in 2004, Promef has the purpose to modernize Brazilian naval industry on current and competitive basis starting from the intent order of 49 Oil Tankers. The program was developed base on three premises: to build the ships in Brazil, to reach a minimum nationalization level (65 percent on the first stage, 70 percent on the second) and to offer conditions for shipyards to be competitive, practicing international prices and deadlines.
