Ukrainian steelmakers issue January-August output data

The major Ukrainian steelmakers have released their preliminary production results for the first eight months of 2009.
 
Accordingly, during the given period Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich) reduced its finished steel product output by 43 percent and its pipe production by 66.8 percent year on year, to 1.95 million mt and 23,800 mt respectively. Ilyich's crude steel production decreased by 40.7 percent, its pig iron output by 36.8 percent and its agglomerate production by 45 percent, year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 2.72 million, 2.28 million and 5.02 million.
 
During the first eight months of 2009, Azovstal decreased its crude steel output by 33.6 percent to 2.78 million mt, its pig iron production by 31.1 percent to 2.39 million mt and its finished steel production by 33 percent to 2.56 million mt, all compared to the corresponding period of 2008. Meanwhile, Azovstal's agglomerate production saw a slight decrease of 0.38 percent to 1.29 million mt, while its metallurgical coke output registered a drop of 21.1 percent to 1.29 million mt year on year.
 
In January-August 2009, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih produced 2.95 million mt of finished steel - down 32.5 percent, 3.27 million mt of crude steel - down 35.3 percent, 2.86 million mt of pig iron - down 36.4 percent, and 5.15 million mt of agglomerate - down 31 percent, all compared to the first eight months of 2008.
 
During the period in question, Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) reduced its pig iron production by 26.4 percent year on year, its crude steel production by 29.8 percent, its finished steel production by 29.2 percent, and its agglomerate production by 8.6 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 1.82 million, 2.46 million, 2.25 million and 2.97 million.
 
During the first eight months of this year, Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (EMZ) decreased its pig iron production by 26.2 percent to 1.4 million mt, its crude steel production by 21.5 percent to 1.58 million mt, its finished steel output by 24.8 percent to 1.5 million mt, and its agglomerate production by 9.2 percent to 1.36 million mt, all compared with the same period last year.
 
Meanwhile, during the given period, the Ukrainian steelmaker Zaporizhstal registered a 23.4 percent decrease in its finished steel production and a 25.7 percent decline in its crude steel production year on year, to 1.82 million mt and 2.17 million mt respectively. Zaporizhstal's agglomerate production went down by 16.4 percent year on year and its pig iron production declined by 24 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 3.22 million and 1.82 million.
 
In January-August, Dneprovsky Iron and Steel Works named after F. Dzerzhinsky decreased its crude steel production by 7.9 percent to 2.33 million mt, its pig iron production by seven percent to 2.17 million mt, and its agglomerate production by 4.6 percent to 3.21 million mt. Meanwhile, during the period in question, the plant increased its output of finished steel by 4.5 percent year on year to 2.23 million mt.
 
During the first eight months of 2009, Makeevsk MZ did not produce any crude steel or pig iron, and registered a 37.4 percent decrease in its finished steel output to 450,000 mt.
