Turkey’s scrap imports fall in January

According to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in January this year Turkey's steel scrap imports fell by 29 percent from December last year and were down 11.5 percent compared to the same month of 2011, amounting to 1.5 million metric tons.

According to the data released by TUIK, in January the average price of Turkey's steel scrap imports stood at $433/mt, increasing by $2/mt compared to the previous month and up $12/mt compared to January 2011.

In January, the US was Turkey's top scrap import source with 275,376 mt, down 55.7 percent, while Russia followed the US with its scrap exports to Turkey amounting to 233,363 mt, up 27.6 percent, both compared to December 2011. In January, Romania exported 156,135 mt of steel scrap to Turkey, decreasing 6.3 percent, while the UK's scrap exports to Turkey amounted to 154,934 mt, down 40.4 percent, both compared to the previous month.
