In 2011, Turkey's total apparent steel consumption rose by 14.1 percent year on year reaching 26.93 million mt, according to a statement released by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association (DCUD). Of the total consumption figure, 51 percent consisted of long steel products used mainly by the construction sector, while 49 percent was accounted for by flat steel products used generally by the automotive, domestic appliance and machinery sectors.
Turkey's long steel products consumption in 2011 increased by 17.7 percent compared to 2010 to 13.73 million mt, while the country's flat steel consumption grew by 10.6 percent year on year to 13.2 million mt.
The association predicts an eight percent increase for Turkey's total steel consumption in 2012.
