Germany-based steelmaker thyssenkrupp has announced that its subsidiary thyssenkrupp nucera to supply electrolyzers to Sweden-based H2 Green Steel to build the first large-scale green steel plant in Europe.

The operations at the plant in Boden, northern Sweden, are planned to start at the end of 2025 with an initial capacity to produce 2.5 million mt of green steel. By 2030 the capacity is planned to have increased to around 5 million mt.

The 20 MW electrolysis modules to be supplied by thyssenkrupp nucera to produce green hydrogen will enable an installed capacity of more than 700 MW. The plant will be able to produce up to 95 percent lower carbon emissions in steel production by using green hydrogen.
