Thailand’s scrap imports up 20 percent in first half of 2018

According to provisional custom data, Thailand imported 779,298 mt of steel scrap in H1 2018, and 88,533 mt of the total scrap imported in June.

During the six month period, Thailand imported 202,952 mt from the US (26 percent), 109,528 mt from Myanmar (14 percent), 58,296 mt from Australia (7 percent), 43,803 mt from the UK (6 percent), 39,472 mt from the Caribbean (primarily Trinidad and Tobago) (5 percent), 30,088 mt from South Africa (4 percent), 27,784 mt from New Zealand (4 percent), 23,586 mt from Japan (3 percent), and 243,789 mt (31 percent) from other countries. The UK encountered the highest scrap imports during the June period compared to other source countries.

Scrap imports in H1 2018 are 20 percent higher than for the first six months in 2017 when SteelOrbis reported Thailand scrap imports of 651,000 mt.
