Austria-based plantmaker Siemens Metals Technologies has announced that it has received an order from Chinese steelmaker Zhongyuan Special Steel Co. for the supply of a vertical continuous caster to produce heavy blooms with a round cross-section.

The continuous caster will have a capacity of up to 370,000 mt per year to produce heavy blooms with diameters of 400 mm, 600 mm and 800 mm and lengths of between 2.5 meters and six meters.

Zhongyuan Special Steel operates an EAF steel mill in Jiyuan, Henan Province. Until now, the company has only had an ingot casting plant for the production of mainly steel forgings. With the new two-strand vertical continuous caster from Siemens, Zhongyuan will also be able to produce blanks for construction steel, tool and bearing steels, as well as heat-resistant stainless steels.

The continuous caster scheduled to be commissioned at the end of 2014 is the first plant of this type Siemens is to supply to China.
