German plantmaker SMS Siemag has announced that it will modernize the 2,050 mm hot strip mill No. 1 of Chinese steelmaker Baoshan Iron & Steel (Baosteel) in Shanghai, China.

The hot strip mill revamp will take place in two phases. The first phase will be completed in the summer of 2013, while the second phase is scheduled to be commissioned in the summer of 2014. The new equipment will reduce the slab width by up to 350 mm.

Baosteel aims to increase the production of both the hot strip mill and the continuous caster and to allow the two production stages to be more flexibly coordinated.
