Austria-based giant engineering and plantmaking company Siemens VAI Metals Technologies (Siemens VAI) has announced the receipt of an order from Chinese company Baotou Steel International Economic and Trading to supply a new human machine interface (HMI) system for the compact hot rolling mill of Baotou Iron and Steel. The conversion work is scheduled to be carried out in April 2010.

Since 2001 Baotou Iron and Steel has been operating a compact hot rolling mill in the Inner Mongolia region with an annual capacity of up to 2.8 million metric tons. The plant includes a two-strand continuous slab caster, a seven-stand finishing mill and two coilers, for which Siemens has already supplied the drive equipment and automation systems.

The compact hot rolling mill will be the third installation at Baotou Iron and Steel to be equipped with a Siemens HMI solution after the coupled tandem pickling line and the plate mill.
