JSW USA announced today that it has restarted its facility in Mingo Junction, Ohio. The plant was idled in 2009 and will now function as a melt and manufacture mill, with the largest Connsteel Tenova EAF in North America

The first slab was cast on December 14, 2018, and JSW USA expects to be more cost effective now that the facility will be melting its own steel.

Looking forward, JSW USA said in a press release that it is already in the design process to install another EAF in Ohio.  The company is also investing in new equipment at its Baytown, Texas mill, to help further JSW USA’s goal of being 100 percent melt and manufacture in approximately 18 to 24 months.

During this process, the company has filed for a limited duration exclusion on the import of 10-inch and 12-inch slabs and API grades of steel that are not available in the United States. However, three US mills have filed objections to JSW USA’s requests for exclusion. The US Department of Commerce has not yet made a decision on JSW’s exclusion request.

Once the company completes the EAFs in Ohio and Texas, JSW USA will have an annual capacity of 3 million tons of flat rolled products, 1 million tons of plate, and 500,000 tons of pipe.
