The Russian steel producer Severstal has announced than in the January-September period this year its total production of crude steel was 12.878 million mt, 18 percent higher than in the first nine months of 2009, while its total hot metal output amounted to 9.524 million mt, 23 percent higher than in the same period last year.
Severstal's total sales of iron ore in January-September this year were 27 percent lower year on year, while its coal sales were up by 60 percent, to 2.32 million mt and about 5.653 million mt respectively.
Meanwhile, during the period in question, the company's consolidated sales of rolled steel products amounted to 10.275 million mt - up 18 percent, its sales of semi-finished products came to 705,493 mt - up 33 percent, and its sales of downstream products totaled 1.35 million mt - up 13 percent, all compared to January-September 2009.
Specifically, in the first nine months of this year, Severstal Russian Steel produced 8.172 million mt of crude steel - up 18 percent year on year, and 6.42 million mt of hot metal, up 24 percent year on year. Severstal Russian Steel's January-September sales of rolled steel products increased by 17 percent year on year to 5.74 million mt.
Severstal's production of hot metal in North America was 3.1 million mt in January-September 2010, which reflects a 23 percent increase year on year, while its crude steel output in North America was reported at 4.7 million mt - up 17 percent compared to the same period last year. In addition, Severstal's North American operations also reported an 18 percent increase in its sales of rolled steel products to 4.55 million mt, but a 20 percent decrease in its downstream product (metalware) sales to 81,286 mt.
Severstal also said that in Q3 2010 its crude steel output fell eight percent quarter on quarter to 4.21 million mt, and its hot metal output dropped by 11 percent quarter on quarter to about 3.04 million mt, mainly driven by a decline in the US of 26 percent and 33 percent respectively.
