Indian state-run steel producer Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has received approval from the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) for manufacture of special shipbuilding grade steel plates, a company official said on Friday, July 26.

SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) has received the necessary ‘works approval’ and certificate from the IRS after verification of the entire process of steelmaking capabilities in the plant, the official said.

At first, BSP will be supplying steel plates to Hindustan Shipyards Limited which in turn will use it for manufacture of Diving Support Vessels (DSV) for the Indian Navy, the SAIL official said. The IRS certification covers the manufacture of special grade steel plates of normal strength of thickness ranging between 8 mm to 24 mm, he added.
