SAIL and RINL to increase steel production

The Press Information Bureau of the Indian government has announced that Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) are in the process of implementing their expansion programs.

According to the statement, SAIL's liquid pig iron output is proposed to be increased from the present level of 14.4 million metric tons per year to 23.46 million metric tons while RINL's liquid steel output is proposed to be increased from the current three million metric tons per year to 6.3 million metric tons. The cumulative expenditures incurred by SAIL and RINL during the last three years (FY 2006-07 to FY 2008-09) are Rupees 37.99 billion (approx. US$778.24 million) and Rupees 40.41 billion (approx. US$827.82 million) respectively.

As part of the overall expansion of SAIL, the annual liquid pig iron production of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) will increase from 2.12 million metric tons to 4.5 million metric tons.
