South Korean steelmaker Hyundai Steel, the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC), the Korean Recycled Construction Resources Institute (KRCRI) and fellow South Korean steelmaker POSCO have signed an agreement to collaborate on green infrastructure projects and to promote a circular economy, according to a statement by Hyundai Steel.

Accordingly, the partners will share knowledge and work on joint R&D projects to construct environmentally friendly highways using steel by-products.

In the meantime, KEC will revise road pavement standards to include steel by-products, while KRCRI will partner with the ministry of environment to drive systemic improvements in line with the agreement’s goal. On the other hand, Hyundai Steel and POSCO will improve the quality of by-products.

“Green construction is no longer a choice, but a necessity. Our institute will actively cooperate with research entities and the private sector to develop sustainable technologies for expressway construction,” Cho Nam-min, head of KEC, stated.
