According to the data released by the Russian Federation's Federal State Statistics Service, in January this year Russia produced four million metric tons of finished steel products - up 24.7 percent, 604,000 metric tons of steel pipes - up 58.5 percent, and four million mt of pig iron - up 45.5 percent, all compared to January 2009. Meanwhile, on a month-on-month basis, the figures in question saw declines of eight percent, 21.4 percent and 3.1 percent respectively.
In addition, in January the country registered an 11.6 percent increase in its coal mining output and a 53.3 percent rise in its iron ore mining output year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 26.6 million and 7.4 million - down 13.4 percent and 3.5 percent month on month respectively. Meanwhile, Russia's coke output in the first month of this year went up by 45.1 percent year on year to 2.3 million metric tons, but saw a decrease of 1.5 percent compared to December 2009.
