US steel producer Nucor has announced that it has temporarily idled its direct reduced iron (DRI) plant in Louisiana due to the impact caused by the coronavirus outbreak, in particular, the economic uncertainty nationwide.

The suspension of the DRI facility in Louisiana with a capacity of 2.5 million mt per year follows the announcement last week of the shutdown of the company’s DRI plant in Trinidad and Tobago.

For the period of the suspension of the DRI facilities, Nucor will use DRI from existing inventories, SteelOrbis understands.
