NLMK Verona, Italian subsidiary of Russian steelmaker NLMK, resumed operations on April 15 after previously suspending production on March 25 as a result of the spread of the coronavirus. Its other European assets continued to operate.
Just like other steel companies in Italy in the past week or so, NLMK Verona also sought a derogation in relation to the latest decrees of the Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte, claiming that it produces essential goods.
According to sources, the plant is now operating at a lower production rate due to both weak market activity and the need to use a lower number of employees as per government indications. The company, as many others in Italy recently, has introduced additional safety measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
The plant, located near Verona in northern Italy, employs 260 people and has the capacity to produce 450,000 mt of steel per year (plates, forged and rolled plates, forged blocks and ingots).
