The Russian steelmaker Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has announced that, within the implementation of one of its major investments projects, it is continuing the construction of the new continuous slab caster No. 6 at its oxygen-converter workshop.

Accordingly, up to July 1 2009 MMK is to finalize the assembly of the workshop and the construction of other units, and within the coming days is to commence the installation of the equipment for the continuous slab caster. About 3,800 mt of a total 4,200 mt of the contracted equipment, supplied by German plant building company SMS Demag, has already been received by MMK.

With the construction of the new continuous slab caster No. 6, which is planned to be commissioned by the end of current year, MMK is pursuing its goal of satisfying the slab feedstock requirements of its new plate mill 5000. The new continuous slab caster will have a production capacity of 1.65 million mt per year.
