Mexico’s economy secretariat, SE, said this week it may retaliate against US exports of goods to Mexico as a response to an announcement by the Trump administration to impose 5 percent duties on Mexican goods, effectively on June 10.

Mexico’s deputy foreign minister, Jesús Seade, said the damages the US tariffs will cause to the Mexican economy will be “extensive.”

SE said it will adopt the “dialogue” as a strategy to avoid a “costly and unnecessary dispute,” at the same time it evaluates imposing retaliatory tariffs.

A Mexican government news agency said Mexico could also bring the case up to international bodies.
