Mexican steel imports in the January-August period increased 11.2 percent, year-on-year, according to figures released this week by the country’s Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero).
Canacero said imports in the first eight months of the year totaled 9.15 million mt. As the nation’s apparent steel consumption rose 9.7 percent in the same period, the additional demand was completely absorbed by imports.
Canacero said about 47 percent of the nation’s steel consumption in the period was met by imports.
