Mexican HDG consumption and production decline in March

The apparent consumption of galvanized sheet in Mexico decreased 4.4 percent, year-over-year, in March, totaling 370,000 metric tons (mt). Production also decreased 8.6 percent to 276,000 mt, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.

Production contributed 74.6 percent of consumption, 3.4 percentage points less compared to the same month last year. Considering the production of March, the lower consumption of HDG is equivalent to the stoppage of 1.9 days of production.

In March, galvanized sheet was the third most consumed product in Mexico, only surpassed by rebar and hot rolled coils (HRC).

The flow of international trade for Mexican HDG decreased 11.9 percent or 25,000 mt to a total 185,000 mt in March. Exports decreased by 27.4 percent, year-over-year, totaling 45,000 mt, while imports decreased 5.4 percent to 140,000 mt.

According to Canacero, the steel companies that produce galvanized sheets in Mexico are Ternium and TA 2000 (TYASA). In addition, the rolling mills Posco México and Villacero.
