Singapore-based steelmaker Meranti Green Steel has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Thailand-based Millcon Steel PCL to collaborate on advancing low-carbon steelmaking in Thailand.

The agreement focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the steel production value chain and supporting the transition toward greener production routes in the Thai steel industry.

Joint efforts to support industry transformation

Under the partnership, both companies will work on developing strategies to decarbonize steel production while strengthening cooperation with key stakeholders.

This includes engagement with government authorities, industry associations and related businesses to establish standards, guidelines and support mechanisms aligned with global trade requirements and environmental regulations.

Integration with Oman green iron project

Meranti Green Steel highlighted the potential to integrate its planned green iron production facility in Duqm, Oman, with downstream steelmaking operations in Thailand.

Such integration is expected to support regional decarbonization efforts while enhancing supply chain efficiency and industrial competitiveness.

Strengthening Thailand’s steel sector competitiveness

Millcon Steel CEO Pravit Horungruang stated that the partnership represents an important step in aligning Thailand’s steel industry with global decarbonization trends.

He added that the collaboration is expected to accelerate the development of green steel production and improve the long-term competitiveness of the domestic steel sector.
