The Kazakhstan government has announced that it has signed an investment agreement to build the country’s first modern metallurgical coke plant in the Karaganda region.

The project will have a planned annual production capacity of 1 million mt and is expected to become one of Kazakhstan’s first large-scale coal chemical initiatives.

The agreement was signed between the ministry of energy and Kazakhstan Success Coking Energy. Kazakhstan Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov and Kazakhstan Success Coking Energy Chairman Jin Sheng signed the document, which was approved by a government decree.

Full-cycle metallurgical coke complex planned

According to the announcement, the project will involve construction of a full-cycle metallurgical coke production complex. The development is expected to strengthen Kazakhstan’s industrial processing capabilities and expand value-added utilization of domestic coal resources.

The project will be commissioned gradually. The first phase is scheduled to begin operations in 2029 with annual production capacity of up to 500,000 mt of metallurgical coke. Full production capacity of 1 million mt per year is targeted by 2031.

Total investment in the project is estimated at KZT 63.5 billion, equivalent to approximately $134.13 million. The development is also expected to create up to 500 permanent jobs in the region.
