ISCOR not influenced by NUMSA strike

The African major steel maker Iscor states that the strike by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) reached its third day, but did not make a difference in the company's operations. According to the company officials, the production is running normally at the Vanderbijlpark steel plant outside Johannesburg, at the Newcastle plant in northern Kwa-Zulu Natal and its Saldanha Steel facility on South Africa's west coast. The company states that although it spent over Rand 294 million over the three-year period from 1998 through to 2000 to employees to meet the re-engineering targets and therefore has no legal obligation to make any further "hardship" payments as requested by the union, it has offered a once off ex-gratia payment of Rand 4.6 million and increased it to Rand 6.75 million afterwards. Upon the rejection of the offer by NUMSA, the company left the final decision to the court.
