Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes rise 29.6 percent in March

Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 1.3 million tons in March, an increase of 29.6 percent compared to a year ago, according to a report today from the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA). However, loadings trailed the month’s 5-year average by 5.5 percent, LCA said.

Year-to-date the iron ore trade stands at 3.1 million tons, a decrease of 9.1 percent. Iron ore shipments are 10.7 percent behind their 5-year average for the first three months of the year, LCA said.
