Ukrainian steel pipe and railway wheel producer Interpipe sees scrap exports as economically unreasonable, Olga Korotkova, chairman of the board of Dnepropetrovskiy Vtormet, part of Interpipe, told Ukrainian news agency UA Prom.
Korotkova said the company does not have an opportunity to import steel scrap due to import duty, including five percent duty on import scrap and five percent duty on import of all types of goods to Ukraine.
She also specified that not all sea ports are capable of importing scrap, and, besides, the steel mills which need steel scrap are located at quite a distance from ports, and so these mills will have extra expenses for delivery by railways and transshipment.
Dmitriy Kiselevskiy, head of the corporate relations department at Interpipe, added that the company is also against relief on scrap export restrictions, suggesting that cancellation of these restrictions could badly affect the Ukrainian steel industry which already has a scrap deficit. The scrap deficit was estimated at 800,000 mt in 2013 and at 200,000 mt in 2014, he said.
